Capsule Wardrobe Tips (and $200 to get you started!)

March 6, 2015

Some people find the idea of a capsule wardrobe intimidating. A limited number of clothing pieces for a set amount of time? How do we even begin to choose which lucky pieces those will be?

I wrote a few weeks ago about wearing 40 pieces in 90 days (click here to see all what I selected) and I am LOVING it. It really comes down to choosing the pieces wisely, so I’ve put together a few tips on how to do that.

5 Goals For A Capsule Wardrobe

February 25, 2015

Last week, I introduced my Spring capsule wardrobe and talked a bit about why I’m doing it. The main principle behind this simple wardrobe project is this:

Clothes should be made for the body, not the body for clothes.

Pretty straight-forward, right? I’m coming from the perspective that our possessions should serve us while we pursue the things that matter most deeply (hint: not our possessions). But oftentimes we find ourselves subject to our possessions– organizing them, buying them, pursuing them, and then getting rid of them.

But there are lots of different reasons why you might want to try a capsule wardrobe, and I want to share them here. There’s no point in trying a project without end results, and I bet that some of these goals might even impress you!

Wardrobe Simplicity: 40 Pieces in 90 Days

February 18, 2015

We shouldabsolutely love all of our clothes. But so often, we don’t.

We should be pleased when we look at our wardrobes. But sometimes all we want is something new.

Our clothing should make us feel fantastic. And yet, it frequently doesn’t.

It’s time for a new approach to building a wardrobe. It’s called a CAPSULE WARDROBE.

A capsule wardrobe allows us to simplify our closet, eliminate the amount of time folding, organizing, buying and washing our clothes, and guarantees that we’ll always love what we wear.

I’m launching my capsule wardrobe today: 40 pieces in 90 days.

Refocus: Minimalism

February 9, 2015

Sometimes we need to step back and seriously think about what we’re doing. And that’s what I’ve done here with Simplicity Relished.

You see, when I wrote last month that I would be blogging less than usual, it was in part because I felt unsure about what exactly I was so committed to. So I’ve given it all some thought. I’ve given my own life some thought. …Continue Reading

Cozy and Bright

January 6, 2015

Well, so much for winter. We’re back in Pasadena and it’s in the 70s again! That said, the slightly chilly mornings are still reason to wear a few cozy pieces. And it’s no longer the holiday season, but it doesn’t mean that a few bright accents aren’t in order.

Clothes With Stories

December 16, 2014

I used to be a much more avid shopper than I am now. But I do love looking back on purchases or gifts from the past and remembering the circumstances surrounding it. Wearing a piece of clothing or jewelry from someone you love can bring back such good memories. And thankfully, my very fashionable mom gives me some of her greatest pieces!

Clothes with stories 3

This coat is one of hers that she passed down to me, and it’s one among only a couple that I kept after completing my 5-year stint in New England. I know I won’t need so many coat choices anymore, but I couldn’t let go of this one.

Clothes with Stories 1

The miniskirt? Not something I’d wear without tights, of course– but that’s why winter weather is so great! (By the way, I’m now in NorCal where it’s “cold”! Hooray!) In colder weather, I love wearing tights and short shorts, mini skirts or shorter dresses to mix it up a little.

This is a pretty special skirt too. It was purchased more than 10 years ago when my mom and I traveled to Europe together for the first time. I was only a teen back then, and she generously bought me this piece to help me remember the great time we had together.

The sweater doesn’t hold as significant a story, but it has made it through lots of very cold winters with me. I love cowl-neck sweaters and dresses because they can be dressy without being over-the-top. And of course dark red is a great color for this season.

Do you have clothes that tell stories? What’s a special piece that you love to wear? I’d like to hear about it!

This SoCal’d Winter

December 9, 2014

Last week, it rained for two days. The cool temperatures, gray skies and sweet aroma of rain-soaked grass and pavement were an absolute delight. But now we’re back to the relentless SoCal sun, and can only wish it were winter like it is throughout the rest of this country.

SoCal Winter 3

I’m learning to dress seasonally for a place with no seasons. And I’ve realized that it is more about the colors, fabric and vibe than about how many layers you’ve got on. With highs in the 70s and even the 80s, we hardly need to own coats!…Continue Reading

Leaves And A Sweater Dress

December 1, 2014

I know that some of you are in quite chilly climates now, but I finally found AUTUMN this weekend while visiting family in Northern California. It was amazing to see so many colorful trees (which I promptly Instagrammed) and to even experience a bit of rain today. I could hardly resist taking a few photographs with my favorite fall trees while I still could.

Little Girl Loves

November 17, 2014

When I was a little girl, I loved all things stereotypically girly. Lace, chiffon, beads, dresses, long hair, jewelry, tights, satin– all of it (though I preferred green over pink)! I was constantly begging my mother to allow me to get my ears pierced, and I even started ballet so that I could wear a tutu. Yup, that was me….Continue Reading

Classroom Ready

November 11, 2014

In Southern California, looking professional while fitting in can be more of a challenge than it seems. Women appear to fill their closets with laid-back attire that is also excruciatingly trendy. While I can appreciate a tasteful crop top or romper, these aren’t pieces I’ll be wearing into a charter school classroom next year. In addition to looking for relaxed yet polished clothing, I’ve also been figuring out how to build a professional capsule wardrobe for teaching….Continue Reading

So Chill.

November 3, 2014

I’ve always loved the idea of a soft old t-shirt that I could wear everywhere. But for some reason, most of my old t-shirts are stiff as ever, no matter how many times I wear and wash them. So I’ve been on the lookout for a compromise: clothing that is unbelievably soft and yet feels appropriate for multiple occasions. And I think I’ve found it!…Continue Reading
