Essential Oils 101 (+ a giveaway!)

November 9, 2015

I am thrilled to have Caroline of the College Cosmopolitan on the blog today sharing about the benefits of essential oils. I fell in love with oils when I made my first sugar scrub, but Caroline is the expert here! Have you wondered why essential oils have become so popular lately? Read on.

Essential Oils 101

I found essential oils when I decided to make my own Christmas gifts last year instead of buying. I wanted gifts that were meaningful, simple and more ethical than buying from big commercial stores.

As I perused Pinterest for ideas and inspiration, almost all of the gifts that stuck out to me (aka, things I was capable of creating) included essential oils. DIY lip balms, bath salts, lotions, scrubs and soaps all had a drop of oil included in the recipe. Even some recipes for homemade pumpkin bread and apple pie included essential oils.

Intrigued, I dug a little deeper. What I found is that there is literally an oil for everything. They can be used to replace personal care products, diffuse into the air, clean our homes and, best of all, keep us healthy. And according to all the mom-bloggers and naturalists on the web, they are the real deal. So I bit the bullet and purchased my premium starter kit from Young Living essential oils.

So, what are essential oils?

Essential oils are the “lifeblood” of the plant, which means they protect the plant, provide nutrients and fight off diseases from entering the plant. The oil keeps every part of the plant healthy – root, leaves, bark, tree, fruit, etc. And just as they can protect plants, they can also protect our bodies. Mankind has been using essential oils since before medicine ever existed.

Essential oils were mankind’s first medicine.

They can benefit us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Specifically, they can be used aromatically, topically and internally (but only if you’re using a therapeutic brand like Young Living. Do not ingest any oils you can buy from the store).

My favorite thing about using essential oils is how I’ve been able to replace my entire stock of unhealthy, toxin-filled personal care products. Our skin eats 60% of what we put on it, so I feel way better knowing the essential oil infused products I now buy or make myself are feeding my skin well.

My other favorite way to use essential oils is by diffusing them, which I do every night. The oils are naturally calming, so it sets the mood before bedtime, and they purify the air. But the best benefit from diffusing essential oils? You get all the health benefits from the oils just by breathing them in – even as you sleep!

For instance, diffusing Thieves oil builds your immunity and fights off sickness. Diffusing Stress Away, a blend of calming oils, does exactly what it says it will and melts away stress as you unwind from the day.

The uses for essential oils are far and wide, and while they may seem complex in the beginning, they are a simplistic, minimalist, go-to solution that’s completely natural.

Did you burn yourself? Want to moisturize your face? Can’t sleep? Did you stain the carpet? There’s an oil for each of those.

If you want to know more about essential oils, you can check out my series: 10 Days of Essential Oils. You can also email me at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com to find out how to get your hands on a starter kit or attend an online class. I’m always here to help.

I like the idea of essential oils, but I can’t seem to find a reliable diffuser.
they are all so flimsy and hard to operate without making a mess. Any ideas appreciated!

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hi Marenda! So sorry I’m just seeing this comment!! I’ve only used Young Living diffuser, and they are definitely reliable and mess free. 🙂 I’d love to give you more info on how to get your hands on one – just shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com!

  • Emily Rose

What do you say to people who are skeptical about oils? I’ve been thinking of trying oils for about a year, but someone I really trust is so skeptical about them (since, in general, they are not FDA approved) that I’ve had a hard time pulling the trigger! Any advice for me?

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hey Emily! I understand the skeptism completely – it took my awhile to get on board with oils. I did a lot of research before I chose a brand of oils I trusted, and in the end I went with Young Living because of their Seed to Seal promise, which you can read about at seedtoseal.com. I would pass this website along to your friend too! It really helps to understand the process and respect the purity of Young Living essential oils over other oils on the marketplace. No on else does it quite like Young Living – they have farms all over the world where they personally plant and harvest their crops, and for certain other crops that they don’t harvest on their farms, they work with farmers that typically only work with Young Living because of the respect the company has achieved. Anyway…sorry that was long, but this is definitely a topic I’m passionate about! I hope it helped!

I’d love to invite you and your friend to an online essential oil 101 class where I’ll go over this some more. It’s on Facebook so it’s very flexible with schedules. Just follow this link and request to join and I’ll add you in! 🙂

      https://www.facebook.com/groups/760930244011537/

      • Emily Rose

Thanks Caroline! I’m definitely interested in the Facebook group, but the link isn’t working for me…

        • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hey Emily! The class is closed now (sorry I should’ve mentioned it was just Sunday-Monday!), but I’d still LOVE to send you all the same info, and I’d love to send your friend some info on the seed to seal promise as well. Just shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com! 🙂

  • valerie sobus

  • inkberry

I’ve used numerous essential oils. I would like to learn how to make my own

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

That would be so cool! I know that Young Living Essential Oils go through many many processes, steps and strict tests to make sure they are up to YL’s standard. But the cool thing is that Young Living has multiple farms all over the world, and you can call ahead and just go visit them and see the whole process!

If you’d like more info on Young Living I’d love to add you to my upcoming online class. You can read all the info on your own time so it’s very flexible. Just follow the link, request to join and I’ll add you in! 🙂

I loved my sample of Lavender! I used it topically, then handed the remains over to my mom for migraine relief! I can’t wait to get my kit this week!

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Lavender is the best!! It can seriously be used for so many things. I can’t wait till you get your kit either!

  • Kelsey

How do you choose between different brands of essential oils, especially when they are not regulated?

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hi Kelsey! I ONLY use and trust Young Living essential oils. Just as you said, other companies that you find on the marketplace (like at whole foods or other health food stores) are NOT regulated, which means they are made with synthetic chemicals and fragrances, so I would never tell anyone to ingest those oils (or really to even use them). Young Living has a Seed to Seal promise, which means that from the time the seed is planted, to when the crop is harvested, steam distilled and then finally bottled and sealed, nothing unnatural touches the product. It is purely 100% oil. You can check out more about that process at seedtoseal.com, and please shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com! I’d love to give you more info and tell you more great things about using Young Living.

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hey Kelsey! Just wanted to pop back in and let you know I decided to host an impromptu online essential oils 101 class. I’ll share more about why I trust Young Living so much and the integrity behind the company, along with how to use several oils. I’d love for you to join! Just follow this link and request to join, and I’ll add you in! https://www.facebook.com/groups/760930244011537/

  • Catherine @ The Blissful Mind

This is such a great giveaway, Daisy! I’m a huge sucker for lavender and bergamot.

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

  • Elise Laney

I have always been curious about essential oils… my best friend swears by them, but I just haven’t set aside the time to give them a shot. Thanks for sharing some of the basics! 🙂

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Elise, I’d love to give you more info! It took me awhile to get started after hearing about oils over and over again, and now my only regret is that I didn’t start using them sooner! Shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com for more info. 🙂

  • Kiki

    I began using essential oils back in July and I was so excited when I saw you make this post! They are amazing! My favorite being lavender and rosehip oils. I use them constantly, and actually carry the lavender with me always. It clears up rashes on babies in a matter of minutes! I swear by it. Trust me, haha, babies are constantly getting odd rashes. (;

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

I’m so glad you use them and love them! Have you tried using them with a diffuser yet? It’s an amazing way to experience essential oils! Shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com when you’re ready to give some more essential oils a try!

      • Kiki

A diffuser is actually on my Christmas list. (; Right now, I just apply a small amount onto my skin. (:

        • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Diffusers are SO great – I think they’re my favorite way to experience oils. 🙂 I’d love to add you to an upcoming online class where you can learn more about oils on your own time! Shoot me an email and I’ll add you. 🙂 Caroline.eaton92@gmail.com

  • Mary

I’ve been intimidated by essential oils, but diffusing sounds like a really good place to start. Thanks for sharing!

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hey Mary! In my opinion, diffusing oils is the BEST way to experience them. Obviously all ways to experience them are great and super powerful, but it’s just incredible how the diffuser can fill your whole room and make it feel like a spa. And the effects of diffusing – purifying your air and creating a calming atmosphere – are incredible. I’d love to help you get your hands on a diffuser! Shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com anytime. 🙂

  • Natalie

I have 2 essential oils and I love the way they smell! I haven’t done much research yet on what they can be used for and the health benefits but I’ve been seeing all kinds of posts about them. Maybe I’ll look into the starter kit! 🙂

    • Caroline @ TheCollegeCosmo

Hey Natalie! Which ones do you have? I’d LOVE to tell you about the starter kit whenever you’re ready – it’s definitely the best way to get started, and it comes with plenty of info on the health benefits and how to use your oils to their fullest potential. I couldn’t say enough great things about the kit. Shoot me an email at caroline.eaton92@gmail.com to talk more. 🙂
