Weekly Capsule: 5 Outfits from my Summer Capsule Wardrobe

May 22, 2015

_DSF3628

Last week I shared my summer capsule wardrobe, and I’m already loving it. The weather has been a bit chilly here in Southern California (and by that I mean cloudy 50s and 60s…), so it was good to have included some cardigans!

If you’re new to the whole capsule wardrobe thing, check out these posts first!

  • My 40-Piece Summer Capsule Wardrobe and Guide
  • Capsule Wardrobe FAQ
  • 5 Goals for a Capsule Wardrobe (what’s the point?)

One of the main lessons I learned from my previous capsule wardrobe was that high-maintenance clothing is not my friend. A few of my dry-clean-only pieces lasted throughout the 3 months, but others required washing. And, as a result, I lost the opportunity to wear them more than a few times.

This season, I specifically selected pieces that could stand a few washes. Some of the tops and bottoms have been in my closet for ages– 7 years to be exact! The fact that I can still love and wear them means that money was well spent.

_DSF3646The most important thing to remember when it comes to building a capsule wardrobe is to balance variety and consistency. Variety will allow you to put together a diverse collection of outfits that is exciting and inspiring throughout the 3 months. Consistency ensures that different pieces will go well together– in materials, colors and patterns.

Accessorizing is another really fun way to take a capsule wardrobe from good to great. I don’t include accessories in my wardrobe (though I do include shoes), because a scarf is not an adequate piece of clothing on its own. However, playing with these pops of color– from jewelry to hair accessories to scarves and belts– can only enhance the clothes that already make you look and feel awesome.

My Weekly Capsule Series…

Some of you asked for photos of how I wear my capsule wardrobe from week to week, so I’m sharing them on Fridays throughout the season! I hope you enjoy these outfits; they’re exactly what I wore on a particular day, so you can get a good idea of what is working for me!

That coral color is STUNNING on you!!!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Ah thanks girl!! xo

  • Anna | slightly astray

I love outfit posts! I love the 4th outfit with the blouse and yellow skirt and the large stone necklace from the 1st outfit!! Do you mind if I ask how tall you are? Because I’m really short (with wider hips) and I’m afraid to wear maxi dresses as I feel like they make me look shorter, but you look amazing in the coral dress!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ah thanks so much Anna! I’m 5’4″ .. so I guess that makes me average but I still fit into petites! Every time I’ve purchased a maxi dress I’ve had to make sure that it was the right length. I think maxis can look really great no matter how tall you are though!

  • Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

I’m seriously coveting your wardrobe girl! I must, must, must do a capsule wardrobe asap! Your posts always inspire me so much. Love your yellow cardigan – I have a lovely mustard one (ok, two lovely mustard ones) that I wear pretty much year round – they go with eveything! xx

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ah thanks Carly!! Mustard is SUCH a good color– it’s so bright and just exudes confidence!

  • Christina McCall

I’m going to have to add a yellow cardigan back into my wardrobe at some point after seeing alll the pops of yellow in your outfits (mine got too tight in the shoulders after I started weight training!)

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ooh yellow cardigans are just so great. And I guess that’s a good way to grow out of something– you go, girl!

  • Heidi D.

You do such a nice job with your capsule collections and I’m loving the yellow!

I really like that beautiful yellow skirt – I was looking forward to seeing how you wore that! But my favourite outfit has to be the last one, I like the colours with the addition of the scarf! 🙂 I’ll enjoy this blog series.

Yellow is definitely a beautiful color on you! I’m jealous! I love how you used the short sweater to style and give shape to you Maxi. It’s been SO cold in SF that I am escaping to Florida tomorrow…yay! Thanks for the colorful inspiration as always.

  • Kiki

    I saw these in my blog feed and gave out a big YAY. Let me begin by saying I’m so excited to participate in a style challenge next month. Before the blog world, I’d never heard of a style challenge, and after getting to know Mica, over at Away from the Blue, I’m so excited to tackle my first. Basically a different prompt each day forces you to shop what you have a be creative. Even if an outfit doesn’t necessarily turn out great, you’re trying. I thought of you when I decided to do something like this. Maybe you’ll be interested? The first one I’m trying is a very short two week one. Perfect for a beginner I think. (;
Your capsule wardrobe is genius and all of these outfits look fantastic! I love how you mentioned playing up looks with accessories. I feel like that’s something we all tend to forget about.
Have a fantastic holiday weekend Daisy!

  • Colleen

This is such a great idea! I’ve greatly reduced my wardrobe since I’m moving, so I feel like I’m kind of dressing with a capsule wardrobe also!

    COOCOO FOR COCO
