My 3-Minute Messy Bun

March 31, 2015

A few of you have asked me how I whip up my hair into a carefree messy bun, so I thought I’d share! It’s been a while since my last beauty post and I want to write more about my simple everyday routine.

First, I’m really not a “hair” person. I have pretty plain, straight dark hair, and I’ve never been that good at doing fun things with it. But, I’ve always liked the idea of messy, “I-don’t-care hair.” Unfortunately most of the tutorials online are anything but quick, which I think is a bit ironic for the end result. If it takes time and skill to accomplish, then it can hardly be a real “carefree” look.

The tips I’m sharing today are for creating a genuine I-don’t-care style that literally takes minutes. (I timed myself– it took less than 3 minutes to get my hair together this morning.) My hair is medium length, so this is pretty much doable with any hair that will go back in a ponytail.

So, on to my “tutorial” if we can call it that! The great thing about this tutorial is you can start with hair that is clean, dirty, slept on, or whatever— as long as you don’t have hair that is too different from mine, in which case I can’t help!

Quick and simple messy bun secrets

How To Create a Wearable Messy Bun in 3 Minutes

1) Wet your hair with a spray bottle, or run it under the sink or shower faucet. You want it pretty wet. Pat dry with a towel for about 10 seconds so you have fully damp hair.

2) Use a light texturizing product and massage it through your hair. I use this creme by Bumble & Bumble (and by the way, it’s lasted me YEARS). Get your hair slightly stiff and stringy, but not clumpy.

3) Whip up your hair with a single elastic into your usual messy bun. The product should make your hair sticky and easier to shape, and you’re less likely to get weird lose ends sticking out.

4) Pin if needed, finish with holding spray. I really like this one by Aveda.

(Check out another iteration of the same messy bun here!)

I wear my hair in a topknot the majority of the time. It looks chic and put together, but really it’s the easier thing to do.

  • Courtney @ Adelante

Yep, I definitely need to learn how to do this! I’m always trying to perfect the messy bun for work, but finding a balance between looking chic and looking like I just rolled out of bed can be a bit difficult!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha yes! I know the feeling. Definitely try a texturizing creme– it was a game changer for me!

  • Tiffany Ingram

Messy buns are my jam! I really love the addition to your bun, I must try this!

I need to try that hair creme. I’ve been looking for a new product and this sounds like just what I’ve been looking for!

It’s SO great! You’ll love it– it’s so good for beachy waves too!

  • Christina @ Embracing Simple

This is so adorable Daisy! My hair is a bit crazy, I might have to try out that Bumble & Bumble creme. I’m all about the messy bun, but mine never looks as pulled together as yours.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ah thanks Christina!! I’m almost 100% sure the product will help!

  • Deniz

Awww this is lovely, Daisy! I am such a failure when it comes to messy buns (or buns in general) – I don’t know what I do wrong but the outcome is always super off!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Deniz!! Haha I know the feeling– definitely try water and texturizing cream 🙂

  • Nina B

My hair is crazy and so I wear is in a way less stylish version of this. I am going to try your tips!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Let me know how it goes! I find that the product can really help with taming and shaping!

  • Kelly

Cute! I’m like you – I can’t really do anything with my hair. Every once in a while, I’m like “I should practice!” But I still can’t even manage a braid that looks nice enough. At least it’s vaguely wavy/not quite straight so I can wash-and-go in the summer 🙂 These days, I’ve been using a hair fork to put it up in a bun-turned-twist and it actually stays in all day, love it!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Kelly! Haha yes I know the feeling. Even when I had long hair and could really do fun stuff with it, I rarely did. Curling iron at best. And that hair fork sounds super convenient!! I love tools like that.

  • Brittany Bergman

Adorable! I always try to do the messy bun, but then my perfectionism takes over and it becomes a ballerina bun. Not as chic and effortless as I was going for. I’ve never thought to wet my hair down first, but I’m going to try it! I have super fine hair, so I think that will help make it “sticky” (along with some product). Thanks for sharing!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Brittany! Yes, the product helps a ton– you have to find one that works well for you (some products are just goop)!

  • Kiki

It’s so funny that some “messy bun” tutorials take fifteen minutes to achieve. With the result being “messy.” Women make no sense. I love how you tackled it and created a real messy bun under 5 minutes with the same results! (:

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

I know right?! Some of them require curling beforehand, it just really doesn’t make sense to me! I get if you’re trying to do a deconstructed look for a party, but definitely not everyday, haha.

  • Amy Hodgdon

Cute! I love a good messy bun on a day when I just need my hair out of my face!
This is a really cute look on you!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Thanks girl!! 😀

  • shannon

A messy bun is my go-to! I’m definitely not a hair person, mostly because my hair sucks, but the time it takes to do hair is just annoying. I love that you added the pretty flower!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw you should definitely try texturizing creme– it thickens the hair like magic! The aveda spray I listed is also really amazing. My hair is not super thin, but it’s on the thinner side, so I feel your pain!

  • Eden Mint

Love this messy bun look, so easy for on-the-go. Love how you added a cute accessory to it too.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks so much!! 🙂 I really appreciate you stopping by!

  • Shireen

I’ve always love a messy bun look, it was about the only way I wore my hair when it was long! Bookmarking this post for suture reference, Daisy!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Yay!! Thanks Shireen! 🙂

  • Ms. Jeannie and Her Closet

I love this messy bun idea Daisy! I normally wear one but it doesn’t look quite as good as yours and I now realize is because I don’t apply texturizing cream. My question is: Do you blow dry the hair a little bit after wetting it and applying the texturizing cream or do you tie it up wet? Thanks so much for sharing Diasy and I love the purple hair flower you added next to it:-) xoxo, Jeannette

    http://www.msjeannieandhercloset.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Jeannie! So, I find it easier to shape a nice messy bun when the hair is a bit damp and “sticky” from product (in a good way, not in a gross way!). So I don’t fully dry the hair, I just get it fully damp, and usually rubbing my head with a towel for a few seconds gets it to that point. My hair usually eventually dries in the bun, and it keeps it pretty tame all day. Hope that helps!! xoxo

  • Anna @ The Beauty Section

Very cute!! My hair is a little too short now to wear in a messy bun, unless I want a ton of stray hairs falling out of the back! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ah thanks Anna! Oh yes, that is a problem… Do you ever curl it? Curled short hair looks so cute!!

  • Nabihah

A lot of messy, “carefree” styles take forever! I find my messy bun is always the nicest when I don’t try but when I do, I can’t get it right! Thanks for the quick, easy style 🙂

Yes exactly!! Easy-looking styles should actually be easy!
