Clothes With Stories

December 16, 2014

I used to be a much more avid shopper than I am now. But I do love looking back on purchases or gifts from the past and remembering the circumstances surrounding it. Wearing a piece of clothing or jewelry from someone you love can bring back such good memories. And thankfully, my very fashionable mom gives me some of her greatest pieces!

Clothes with stories 3

This coat is one of hers that she passed down to me, and it’s one among only a couple that I kept after completing my 5-year stint in New England. I know I won’t need so many coat choices anymore, but I couldn’t let go of this one.

Clothes with Stories 1

The miniskirt? Not something I’d wear without tights, of course– but that’s why winter weather is so great! (By the way, I’m now in NorCal where it’s “cold”! Hooray!) In colder weather, I love wearing tights and short shorts, mini skirts or shorter dresses to mix it up a little.

This is a pretty special skirt too. It was purchased more than 10 years ago when my mom and I traveled to Europe together for the first time. I was only a teen back then, and she generously bought me this piece to help me remember the great time we had together.

Clothes with stories 4

The sweater doesn’t hold as significant a story, but it has made it through lots of very cold winters with me. I love cowl-neck sweaters and dresses because they can be dressy without being over-the-top. And of course dark red is a great color for this season.

Do you have clothes that tell stories? What’s a special piece that you love to wear? I’d like to hear about it!

Such cute items, Daisy! I love clothing items that have a story as well. While many of mine don’t, one I can think of off the top of my head is a gorgeous knitted green and pink scarf my best friend made me several years ago. I always look forward to wearing it.

I’m happy to be catching up on your blog, I’ve missed it!

  • Swimsuit Direct

This article gives me the idea that every clothes we are wearing has stories. I like teh skirt she’s wearing looks so fashionable and cute!
    Cheers!

I love the meaning and stories behind your clothing! That makes the clothes so much better, when they are cute, they fit, and they have a meaningful story to go with it! And that skirt is FIRE! I love it! So cute.

  • JLynn Justad

Oh I just LOVE that coat. The skirt is amazing too! Great look altogether. thanks for sharing your sweet stories friend! xx

  • mark a.

wow! you look so amazing! that coat is pretty sweet and those tights rock!

  • Brandy Miller

So fun! I love thinking about how/where I got items I wear. They remind me of fun shopping trips, vacations, and moments when Husband says “that looks too cute on you for me to not get it for you.” Ha! (Most of those involve hats.. he’s a sucker for me in a hat.) I also love the sentiment that comes with many outfits because of WHERE I wore them to. Like the dress I wore for our engagement pictures and the outfits I wore on our honeymoon. They take me back to those moments. 🙂

  • Sarah @ 12 Twenty Seven

I love that coat! I have several pieces of my grandmother’s clothing that I wear! I’ve also started wearing my grandfather’s winter coat! It makes me feel SO close to them!

  • Erin Elizabeth

What a fantastic thing to do! I love that you stopped to appreciate where each of these pieces came from and the people you were with when it happened! I love that! This coat is so pretty!

What a beautiful coat! I have a whole drawer full of my grandmother’s scarves, I wear one as a headband and always get lots of compliments. Sadly, I didn’t get them until she passed away so she never knew that her pieces were still being enjoyed.

You sucked me in with your title! This is one of my favorite ways to do outfit posts–reminisce about how each piece ended up in your wardrobe!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw, glad to hear it Rachel! It’s fun to share stories about the things we have– it gives them more value!

I admire the relationship you have with your mom 🙂

clothes with stories are always a bit nicer to wear:-) and i love that coat, it’s lovely! x

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Laura!! You are so kind.

  • Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

That coat is AMAZING! I have a lot of clothing items that I’ve hung on to just for sentimental reasons! x

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ah thanks girl!! Up until recently I still had most of my halloween costumes from childhood.. it was time to get rid of those 😉

  • shannon

Seriously that coat is gorgeous! What a great piece to have handed down from your mom….useful and sentimental! I’m trying to think of some clothing items of mine that hold sentimental value, but I don’t think I really have any (sad?). I’ve never really felt an emotional connection to clothing, but I imagine if my mom gave me something I would definitely feel that connection. You look beautiful Daisy!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thank you so much Shannon! Maybe you’ll have a sentimental piece eventually 😉 I love picking up one good piece of clothing or jewelry when I’m traveling, as a memento!

  • Jessica

OMG that COAT. SO stunning! And so much better that it was passed down by your mother. I love this post about stories — so refreshing in this fast fashion obsessed culture to be reminded to slow down and cherish items. And I like that attitude much better than admitting that I’m probably a hoarder ^_^ I’m just hanging on to that coat I never wear to give to my daughter one day! Right??

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thanks girl! I love to cherish things… and I have that problem too. I probably hoard way too many things from my mom to be honest, but they’re so high-quality and I tell myself I’ll wear them eventually 😉 And yes, our daughters will be inheriting lots of great stuff 😉

  • She Said He Said – Fashion

That is so sweet of your mom! I love when my mom does that too. Your outfit is so pretty, the pop of burgundy is gorgeous!

    XO Chelsea http://www.shesaidhesaidfashion.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thanks girl!! You are so kind Chelsea:)

  • Shireen

That coat is lovely and what makes it even better is the meaning behind it. I wish I have something given to me by my mum but I’m the smallest in size so that’s a noon. LOL! I do have a jeans that I bought with my first pay cheque. It’s pretty much in tatters now but I still keep it because it reminds me how hard I worked to finally afford it.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much Shireen! And I love that story about that pair of jeans; it’s so special when something is so precious and can remind you of days/years past. Such a good story to share, too!

  • Jasmin

I can’t believe that skirt is 10 years old. I swear Zara did a very similar one just this summer. Fashion coming full circle once again. It’s almost fascinating isn’t it? I feel the same way about a few things I bought or was given in the past, and I will cherish them forever 🙂

    Jasmin xx

    http://www.whatdefinesus.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hah I had no idea Zara did it last year… I bought the skirt from a little London boutique I think! It is pretty funny how styles come back (or possibly don’t change).

  • Fergzillas *

I love that skirt! I wouldnt wear it without black tights, its pretty short. But its beautiful! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

It is pretty short so it’s perfect for the winter. Thanks!

  • Brooke

I have a jean jacket that I’ve had since high school. I remember wearing it when I met my husband and on our first few dates, so it will always be special to me. I love that I can still wear it!

  • Jaelan @ Making Mrs. M

Clothes with stories are the best!
That’s one reason I have such a hard time letting go of some pieces that I don’t wear often.
I love that the coat was your moms! That’s really special.

I was given a necklace by my parents for my birthday–a gorgeous diamond pendant. I lost it over Christmas last year and i was so so sick. It’s not like me to lost jewelry–I take great care of things–but it was lost all the same. (My mom broke her hip the day after Christmas and everything was in disarray).

Packing for our July 4th trip this year I FOUND THE NECKLACE! I had put it in with my charm bracelet (I suppose for safe keeping??). Ah. It was like a breath of fresh air to find it again.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh my goodness, what a story!!! So glad you rediscovered it eventually– sometimes I try to “stay organized” and that’s the #1 way I lose things… how ironic. I’m so glad you still have it though, and after that chaotic period to have found it!

  • Kiki

I have a beautiful red scarf that my aunt gave to me the Christmas before she passed away. It is one of my favorite things about cooler weather. When I wear it, I feel like a piece of her is with me. (:

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw that is so sweet Kiki. It must be a fantastic scarf that brings back lovely memories.

  • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life

I am loving that beautiful coat! I do have several pieces of clothes that have wonderful memories. I have a favorite pair of boots that I can’t let go of but only wear on rare occasions now because they are beginning to show their age!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Sheryl!! I have a great pair of shoes like that too; some pieces are just too good to lose!

  • Hayley

This is such a cool post! I have noticed this especially recently as I have worn maternity clothes that I wore with Eli. It’s so fun to remember those videos of him moving around in my belly through a shirt that I am now watching Selah move under!! I love the memories behind those clothes–I would have kept that beautiful jacket as well!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Hayley! And wow– that must be so, so cool. Maternity clothes must be so special… I’ll probably keep several pieces forever when I start having kids:)

  • Jenna Brussee

A lot of my favorite clothing pieces have stories, too. I have some dresses I might never get rid of because I have memories of going to special events in them.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw that’s so sweet! I do have a cocktail dress I wore to so many events in high school and I still have it!

  • Elle

What a pretty coat! I love that color and texture.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you! It’s such a great winter color.

  • Charity

Good idea about keeping your mother’s coat! It’s timeless 😉

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

It really is a timeless piece!
