Cozy and Bright

January 6, 2015

Well, so much for winter. We’re back in Pasadena and it’s in the 70s again! That said, the slightly chilly mornings are still reason to wear a few cozy pieces. And it’s no longer the holiday season, but it doesn’t mean that a few bright accents aren’t in order.

Cozy and bright - Simplicity Relished

I used to be a tight-fit, cinch-at-the-waist kind of girl. Lately however, I’ve been preferring looser fits, as they feel a bit more casual and relaxed. I’ve mentioned this before, but SoCal style is much more relaxed than New England, and the difference comes to light especially in this season. In years past I’d be bundled up in a sweater, high-waisted skirt, thick tights and boots around this time of year, but here I am wearing pretty much what I wore a few months ago.

We stopped at the outlet mall when my family from out-of-town was visiting over the holidays. Boy has it been long since I’ve been there! I have to say I was pretty struck by all the “deals” they were offering– specifically, by how unappealing those deals were. I thought I would be offered huge, irresistible bargains that I would later have to justify, but honestly there weren’t many impressive discounts at all. I did pick up this Ann Taylor sweater though– it’s a perfect piece for warmer winters.

I think people like going to outlet malls because they think they’ll get a fabulous deal there. I’m not so sure those deals really exist, but I’ll admit it’s hard to walk away without buying anything at all– especially if you drove all the way over there. Thankfully, our guests found what they were looking for.

Does January have you all bundled up? What are your favorite pieces to wear right now? I’d love to know!

I feel similarly about Outlet malls… I’m like, oh yeah, it’s cheaper, but it’s still REALLY EXPENSIVE. And I’m able to pass.

  • Lauren C.

Loving that scarf, Daisy! And I definitely get what you mean about east coast vs. west coast style. They are so different, that I find myself maintaining two wardrobes. One is more chill-tomboy and the other is more classic-prep. Right now, my favorite things to wear back home are my North Face ballard lace boots, and my down jacket. Gotta go for function over fashion up in these parts!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha Lauren I’m so glad you understand! It’s so tough now that I’m pretty much full-time in SoCal because I’m not sure what to do with my entire winter wardrobe. I don’t want to get rid of all of it (what if one day I’m in a cold part of the world again?) but jackets take up SO much space haha. Stay warm my friend!

  • Rachel Keeth

Our closest mall is an outlet mall, which I often forget since it still has really high prices. However, since I require special shoes I’m always happy that they’re slightly discounted there. Thankfully we’re getting a cold front in, it will finally be in the 30’s! Thankfully a month ago I was able to find a gorgeous heavy pea coat for 50% off at Old Navy! I’m hoping to take advantage of the cold weather and maybe sit outside with a sweater and blanket, hot tea, and a good book.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw I hope you enjoy the cold weather Rachel!! It is the perfect weather to cozy up to a book and cup of tea 🙂

  • Gina Alyse

You are beautiful and just so bright + inspiring! I love this outfit and I love how you are able to wear more relaxed pieces. That is something I really enjoy! It’s definitely more of my style! I hope you’re having a good week, Daisy! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thank you so much Gina, you’re so sweet! I’m learning to embrace the relaxed style 😉 It’s an adjustment!

  • This Photographer’s Life

That scarf is awesome!! I wish I could wear yellow!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Yellow is so fun! It’s all about finding a shade that doesn’t clash with your skin (or hair)!

  • Natalie @ She Builds Her Home

    You are just adorable!!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Aw thanks!! 🙂

You look great! Bright colours look good on you!

Thank you so much– I love bright colors 🙂

  • Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

I love bright pops of colour as well! x

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Thank you!! 🙂

  • Miriam

I love this outfit. I really like the colours. During winter I tend to wear darker colours, but I really don’t want to. I love the colour of the jeans and the scarf together, the sweater is gorgeous, and I like the colour shining through underneath. I have to say that seeing as it’s getting colder here, I am in love with my sweaters. Big knitted ones are my favorite 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Miriam!! It’s always easy to start out with a bright scarf as a pop of color with a darker outfit 🙂 Big knitted sweaters are so great!

  • Kate {Taffeta and Tulips}

Definitely bundled up in NY today since we just had our first snowfall! Love your bright yellow scarf! And I admit, I’m a tad jealous that January for you means 70 degree weather! That sounds pretty amazing!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ooh sounds chilly but pretty in NY! And thank you so much. I’m enjoying the weather quite a bit 😉

  • Charity

My OOTD’s have been leggings and sweaters around here! I’m wishing for 70 degree weather but looks like another chilly week with high’s in the low 40’s later on this week. January & February are always too chilly for me but am loving your pop of color!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Leggings and sweaters were a total staple for me when I lived in a colder climate! Here’s to warmer weather coming your way 🙂

  • shannon

Gorgeous Daisy! I love the bright pop of yellow! I’m with you on the outlet malls, I always have high hopes when I go, but the deals are never really anything special and definitely not worth the travel it takes to get to the closest outlet mall. We are back in the 70’s this week too and I’m actually kind of sad about it. I’m not ready to put away the jackets, scarves and boots!

Thanks Shannon!! The outlet was so far away, but at least it was on the way to our final destination! And I agree about the weather down here– I’d love at least a little rain.

  • Ashley White

I love that loose knit sweater- and the mustard scarf is so pretty on you!

This morning we reached about 20 degrees. It’s freezing here. I was in a hat, gloves, scarf, wool coat. Basically a big bundled up monster. (; I’ve been wearing loads of sweaters lately, but when I get sick of those I switch to cardigans. I’m seriously the cardigan queen. I totally agree about outlet malls. They’re all hype.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Gahhh that’s cold!!!!!! Bundle up and stay warm 🙂 And I’m glad I’m not the only one who wasn’t impressed by an outlet!

  • Lubka Christova

I love this cute layered casual look. And the fact that your winter is already gone is so cool!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much Lubka!! 🙂

  • Jaelan @ Making Mrs. M

I went to an outlet mall recently and had pretty much the same thought as you do.
I did get a couple of really good deals (like some Clark’s oxfords for 67% off) but most of the deals just weren’t *spectacular*.
You look gorgeous! Love the yellow.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oooh that sounds like a perfect deal. But yes, glad to hear I’m not the only one miffed by outlets. And thank you Jaelan!! 🙂

  • Shybiker

Love the Anthro scarf. I shop there all the time. I used to expect to find good prices at outlet malls but were always disappointed; now I don’t shop there for bargains ’cause they rarely have them.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you! Anthro is fabulous, I wish their sales were better though!

  • Elmira Vatsni

You look great Daisy. It is so cold here in Toronto, Canada that all I want to wear is some sort of cozy sweater and leggings even though I am not a huge fan of leggings in general. And of course warm jackets:) Great post! I always love reading your posts even though sometimes I don’t get a chance to leave you a comment.

Thank you so much Elmira! You are so kind 🙂 Warm jackets are essential for your part of the world!

  • Jenna Brussee

This outfit is so cute! It’s still in the 80’s here in Florida. We had a couple of cold days last month where I was able to break out my scarves and boots. Hopefully it will cool off soon so I can wear them more!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Jenna! Here’s to a little bit of chilly weather 🙂

  • Joanna

You look so lovely, Daisy!! That sweater is perfect on you and I love the flats you’re wearing. I live in New England and you described the fashions there very accurately for this time of year! My go-to pieces are sweater dresses, boots and scarves right now.. and huge coats!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much Joanna!! And you must be totally stylin’ in New England right now 😉

  • Joanne

Aw, what a lovely look! <3 Such vivid colours, and so casual! I like your scarf. <3

  • Llinos @ The Lilac Linnet

Such a lovely scarf, the edging is so pretty. The jeans I’m wearing today are a bit baggy around my waist but that’s what belts are for, and it’s more comfortable than squeezing myself into a tight pair!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Llinos! I agree about the jeans too– the looser fit “boyfriend” jean is so great.

  • Rachel G

That scarf is really pretty and fun! I don’t tend to be too impressed by outlet malls, either. Once in a long, long while I’ve found a good deal. In Michigan I had a really warm turquoise columbia jacket that I got at an outlet mall for $30, I used it as my main winter coat for about 3 winters and it was still in perfect condition, I just didn’t bring it with us when we moved!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much Rachel! That jacket sounds like a great deal that more than paid for itself, honestly– but yeah, I was so unimpressed!
