Get to know me better: Vol. 1

October 29, 2014

Happy Wednesday, friends! I’m kicking off this new midweek series where I’m going to share a bit more about myself. I’ve realized that while I do write a lot of personal posts, there is not always a ton of detail about me. So on Wednesdays, I’ll be sharing a few facts about myself that will hopefully intrigueΒ (or at least amuse)Β you. And I hope you’ll share something about yourself too!

1. I’m Taiwanese-American. My parents are immigrants who completed college in Taiwan before moving to the States. I was born in California, and I grew up visiting extended family abroad– grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins– almost every year. I loved it, and I still love being bilingual and enjoyed havingΒ a bicultural experience growing up.

Visiting a favorite Taiwan spot with my mom a few years ago!
Visiting a favorite Taiwan spot with my mom a few years ago!

2. When I was little, my favorite color was green. I wanted green everything. For Halloween I wanted to be Tinkerbell a few years in a row. When I watched Sesame Street I decided my favorite character was Oscar the Grouch– because he was green. It’s one of those things that had no rhyme or reason. I just liked it. Isn’t it refreshing how children do that sometimes?

3. I am the opposite of a techie. While blogging has forced me to learn some basic coding, I’m really terrible about updating my gadgets or troubleshooting anything. I haven’t updated my computer in forever. My phone is more than 3 years old. And I’d rather not own a TV just so that I can avoid dealing with technological issues. I probably would have foregone college if my only choice was an “institute of technology”. In fact, my college room mate had specifically asked to be placed with a techie, and she wound up with me. Woeful disappointment. Thankfully, there are lots of techies in my family.

Eventually my room mate and I figured out how to use a webcam...
Eventually my room mate and I figured out how to use a webcam…

What about you?Β What’s something that most people don’t know about you? I’d love to hear about it!

    Hi Daisy,

I just discovered your blog and I’m liking it already. Your Get To Know Me Better series is really insightful as we get to know bits and pieces of you and your background. I’m not a techy myself and some people have called my Iphone 4S a brick stone! I admire your photpraphy skills. Your photos are so lovely.

Always enjoy these a lot πŸ™‚ Funny how your roommate had requested to be placed with a techie! Ah, I find it so hard to think of something people don’t really know about me (while knowing there are a whole lot of things), should probably be writing a list like this sometime!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Yeah I know right– it was a request I never would have thought of! And I’m sure there are things you can think of, and your readers (including me) would love to read more about you! πŸ™‚

  • Shireen

Aww, I absolutely love this post, Daisy! It’s just great to learn something about a blogger who I follow. I do feel you on the opposite of techie part, I’m completely hopeless with it. Lucky for me, hubby dearest is an IT geek. LOL!

    Reflection of Sanity

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks so much Shireen, I’m glad you enjoyed the post!! Oh yes, we have to keep those IT geeks close to us, right? My husband isn’t quite as into it but he’s a bit of a techie so I’m covered too!

I think it’s so fun to be exposed to different cultures! I was born and raised in Turkey and I moved to the States to attend college – so I can kind of relate (:

    – Deniz

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

That’s so neat Deniz! Actually, when I was little I had a friend named Deniz and her family was Turkish too πŸ™‚ So nice to be getting to know you!

  • Rachel Keeth

This is a great series! I love being able to learn more about you. I understand what you mean, it can be hard to add in more detail about yourself, because it often doesn’t fit the topic. Great solution!

Hmm.. some things about myself. Well for one I am a techie, though I teach myself through trial and error. Mostly because whenever my family needs help with something evolving machines they come to me. I also have an obsession with rings, chiffon, lace, and pearls.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha glad you approve, Rachel! I’m hoping to share a few interesting things in the next few weeks πŸ™‚ You’re a techie! That’s awesome! I’m not brave enough to teach myself things– just in case my computer goes up in smoke πŸ˜‰ Oh, and I love all those things– I’ve loved lace and chiffon ever since I was three and decided to be a ballerina!!

      • Rachel Keeth

I have that fear as well, but I try to get past the anxiety. πŸ˜‰ I did decide to open up my last computer and try to fix it, but it was too damaged to repair. I don’t mind though, because I love my current computer even more.

That’s when I decided to be a ballerina as well! ^_^ Still wish I could of taken classes, but it just wouldn’t work out.

  • Erin Elizabeth

Great post! So neat to read about your background a little bit! Green. Love it! I always liked purple growing up….now I never buy anything purple! Being “techy” is getting harder and harder as society keeps advancing!

Glad you enjoyed the post, Erin! Ooh purple is a great color too πŸ™‚ And exactly– sometimes I feel like once I actually figure out a new technology it will already be on its way out!

  • Brooke

Loved learning more about you! I ‘m only semi techy, I never update my phone or my computer and then when they start breaking down I wonder why, haha!

  • Melanie Jong

So fun to read this! It’s always nice to be able to visit you family abroad. I live in the Netherlands and my family lives in Curacao / Saint-Martin. I know how you feel!

Green is my most favorite color EVER yet I never really like a certain character because they were green! πŸ˜‰ Also–I am so not a techie either but I’m trying to learn so I can be more involved with my gadgets and blog! I love these types of posts–they are my favorite! πŸ™‚

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha that’s so funny Sarah! And yes, I’ve learned a lot of things for the sake of my blog lately πŸ˜‰ So glad you enjoyed reading this, friend!

  • Anne @ Love the Here and Now

Loved getting to know you better! I like the idea of sharing a bit more of yourself each week. The photo of you and your mom is beautiful! Amazing scenery. As for the techie part…I can so relate. Thank God for my husband bc I feel like unless sit’s basic, I won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh yes, my husband is good for the tech stuff too, haha! And thanks so much for your kind words; I miss traveling with my mom!

  • Gina Alyse

This is beautiful Daisy!! I love that your favorite color was green! It’s so fun hearing about each other’s childhoods. We could be so funny as kids! Also, totally fine that you are not a techie–that’s probably a good thing! I go back and forth wanting to go into the tech world and wanting to live in the middle of nowhere with nothing but nature haha! But I love how blogging has led me to coding which is so cool! I’m looking forward to more of these posts, Daisy. I think it’s such a cool series idea!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Gina!! Ooh if you’ve got a little techie in you it will go a long way (whether you pursue it professionally or not), partly because the world is full of people like ME who need help all the time πŸ˜‰ Glad you enjoyed this post, friend!

  • Jen K. of LifeUnrefined.com

I’m Taiwanese-American too! Woohoo! I wonder if your Chinese is better than mine though…last time I was in Taiwan was 13 years ago! πŸ™‚ I’m also not a techie, which might sound weird since I’ve lived in Silicon Valley my whole life, and my husband is an engineer. Instead of helping me fix my computer problems, he insists I should learn myself. Sheesh. πŸ˜›

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw yay!! Haha my Chinese is not excellent… but I can manage πŸ˜‰ Oh girl, I’m a Silicon Valley born-and-raised, and have absolutely no tech skills. It doesn’t just diffuse into our brains, I promise πŸ˜‰ And that’s funny, my dad was in engineering too. Thankfully my husband (who’s a tech nerd psychologist) doesn’t make me figure things out… probably because a new technology will come out before I do! hah!

  • Kiki

Thanks for sharing Daisy. I think it’s awesome to be bilingual and wish the US cared about it like other countries and taught a second language at a young age. Sadly we think two years in high school is enough. /:

I am huge animal lover. I’ve worked with wolves, reptiles of all sorts and some big cats. (:

    http://accordingtokiki123.blogspot.com/

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Kiki!! Yeah, I actually spoke Mandarin most of the time till I went to preschool! It was a challenge back then but I’m really glad to have been bilingual growing up.

And oh my you’ve worked with wolves?!? That sounds SUPER cool. I want to see photos or a post on your blog about that, Kiki!

  • Larisa

Love this! I’m half Filipino, half Chinese and was also born in California! gotta love it πŸ™‚

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh cool! Where in CA are you from?? I was born in San Jose and now I’m in the LA area πŸ™‚

  • Joanna

I love this post, Daisy! I’m half Filipino πŸ™‚ And I’m also the opposite of a techie!!

    lovejoanna.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks so much Joanna! Oh, that’s cool– thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ And then you must understand my woes when it comes to coding and other blogging shenanigans!

  • Miriam

I really liked this post. I’ll look forward to the rest! I too am technology challenged haha. Thankfully my boyfriend is good with it so he helps me out, in return I help him out with maths. It’s a win-win!

    DiscoverMe

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Miriam! And yes, it’s always good to help people out in exchange for techie services πŸ˜‰ That’s what I do at least…

  • Marielle

That’s so cool that you grew up bilingual and bicultural. I’m always so interested in learning about experiences like that. Blogging’s made me become more of a techie – but I’m with you on the TV thing. I always ended up taking one to college, but I never even hooked it up because I couldn’t be bothered. I think most people would be surprised to learn that I love progressive metal (non-screamo, classically influenced kind of metal) because I don’t fit the stereotype and I’m quiet!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Yeah, it was an interesting experience, because I did identify strongly as American and strongly as Taiwanese, but not so much as specifically Taiwanese-American. It was kind of weird! That’s so funny that you took a tv all the way to college but didn’t hook it up! That’s so funny πŸ™‚ And progressive metal, I’ve got to check that out and find out what it means?! I can see how you don’t fit the stereotype too πŸ™‚

      • Marielle

Haha, yeah, my parents were like, “well, maybe you’ll want it” but I just always forgot about it! Prog metal appeals to my SFF geek side, since a lot of the themes are more epic or fantasy based. I wrote a post about my music a while ago, the last song (by my favorite singer ever) is prog metal πŸ™‚

  • Charity

Great idea Daisy and love the picture of you and your mom. I am not a techie as well and I’m technology challenged when it comes to my blog…ha ha! But everyday I try to learn a little bit more and still need to implement DISQUS! My favorite color is white and I drink two cups of coffee first thing in the morning to start my day…
    Charity
    lifeafterbaseball.net

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks so much Charity! Oh, implementing Disqus isn’t too tough πŸ˜‰ The payoff is great too– it’s much less of a hassle to respond to comments! And white is a fantastic color; haha I drink at least 3 cups of coffee throughout the day (half shots, though– I just like the taste). Thanks for sharing, friend!

  • Maggie

I love this post! Getting to know you a bit better is so fun! I hope you keep doing these posts! I’m not really a techie either, and my husband is korean-american! and my favorite color used to be black because I had a black cat haha my parents probably thought I was gothic!

    Maggie
    http://www.PolishedClosets.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thank you Maggie! That’s so funny, we have a few things in common πŸ˜‰ I actually went through a goth stage… it was not a high point in my life… but I was mostly into the fashion and the dark eye makeup!! πŸ™‚
