Get To Know Me Better: Vol 4

November 19, 2014

For those of you just catching up with this series, I’m sharing a few facts about myself every Wednesday and hoping you’ll share something as well! I’ve learned so much about you and am loving it!

Homemade cappuccino & homemade macaron!
Homemade cappuccino & homemade macaron!

1) My husband and I are shameless coffee snobs. Thanks to him, you won’t catch me Instagramming a Starbucks cup! I suppose his obsession with good coffee and espresso started more than 4 years ago when he first moved to New York City. Ever since, he’s converted me to “Third Wave” coffee, meaning hipsters selling higher-quality beans, hand-poured espresso drinks and lots of coffee-making gadgets. Third Wave coffee has grown wildly popular since the early days, with companies such as Blue Bottle and Stumptown becoming widely available. What we love is the nuttiness, fruitiness and sweetness of these brews– flavors that are usually burnt out of regular beans. Plus, most of these third wave beans are fair trade and/or organic, which is a huge plus for us! Do you drink coffee? What is your favorite type of espresso drink?

2) Currently, my favorite animation is Ratatouille. I used to love all the princess stories, but lately I’ve fallen in love with the ones where humans are not the main characters (Monsters and Toy Story too). I love that Ratatouille is set in Paris and that it talks so much about food– my favorite thing! And who doesn’t love a story about achieving one’s dreams? Do you have a favorite animation?

Homemade pasta with tomato sauce

3) I crave salty things when I’m stressed. As much as I share about shortbread cookies and sweet autumn drinks, I gravitate towards salty soups and snacks when I’m feeling anxious. This could be anything from sliced turkey breast to pasta marinara to Japanese ramen– something about the savoriness calms me down. And it’s odd, but I tend only to eat sugar when I’m already in a good mood! When you’re anxious, what type of food do you crave? Does it calm you down?

Thanks for letting me share more about myself! I hope you’ll share something about yourself too!

Hey! I’d love to grab coffee with you. But for now…

If you haven’t tried it, you should check out Mr espresso (which is based out of Oakland, Ca). It’s my all-time favorite. If I’m in New York I always love Joe’s. I’m just like you, Daisy I always go for the salty over the sweet if I’m stressed or anxious. If I’m not careful, I’ll the whole box or container in a single day. Hope you have a wonderful day.

  • ashortblonde

I wasn’t all that impressed with Blue Bottle when we were in NYC. I’m pretty lucky to be surrounded by good coffee shops in Nashville, but I’m not picky. When a girl needs caffeine I’ll take whatever I can get! hehe

    • camillekwynn

Yes! We are so lucky with all the amazing coffee shops in Nashville! I am in love with cortados and coffee sodas at Crema and almond milk lattes at 8th and Roast! xo Camille http://www.thelovelytheory.com

      • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

I’ve heard great things about coffee spots and restaurants in Nashville! Now I just want to be able to visit– sounds like such a great city 🙂

      • ashortblonde

I didn’t realize 8th and Roast had almond milk. I need to try that!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha! I like blue bottle, but they’ve gotten super corporate! At least that means I can find them almost anywhere (including online). Our favorite spot out here is called Intelligentsia, but we love trying new places. Nashville sounds like a great place for coffee!!

      • ashortblonde

Intelligentsia is the best. They are in Chicago and I have dreams about their vanilla lattes. 😉

  • Rachel G

I’m sorry, I don’t drink coffee at all–I don’t like anything with the smallest bit of coffee flavor. Salty foods, though, that I can get behind. Salt is ever so much more my weakness than sugar is!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Really! We have some good friends who just hate coffee, so I get it 😉 Oh, and I’m pretty sure you can find tons of savory snacks in China… though I do hope they’re to your liking 😉

  • Elle

I’ve never seen Ratatouille but I always thought it looked cute. My favorite animation. . .hmm I haven’t watched any in a while but it’s probably between Howl’s Moving Castle and Wall-E. I was also a sucker for that nerdy boy in How to Train Your Dragon.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh it’s a really good one; especially if you enjoy making fun of the French but meanwhile envying them for their food and architectural taste 😉 And I really loved Wall-E too. Haven’t seen Howl’s Moving Castle but that’s what the weekend is for!

  • Lauren C.

Totally feel you on the salty food cravings! I have all of the end-of-semester exams and papers due in the next few days, and I’ve just been eating all the salty and/or sugary foods I can find. It’s so so bad. I’ll probably gain 10 pounds before finals is over!

And I love Ratatouille as well. Then again, all of Pixar’s movies (except for Cars 2) are wonderful. I think my favorite animations probably come from studio Ghibli though. Hayao Miyazaki is a genius.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Lauren! How are you doing? I was thinking of you the other day– I know this is a busy time of year for college students… and yes, it’s totally weight-gain season. But hey, that’s why we wear winter coats and sweaters right? 😉 And yes, Pixar is incredible! I’ve found that so many of my favorites are Pixar collaborations. And I agree, Miyazaki is awesome… so much artistry there!

      • Lauren C.

Aww! That’s so nice that you thought of me. 🙂

I’m doing alright, but I’m pretty stressed out with all the papers and exams. I’m trying to bring up my grade in a particularly rough class, while maintaining all the other plates I’m spinning right now. Unfortunately, my blog was the first plate to fall. I’ll get back on it during reading days or after finals are over I guess.

And yes. I am wearing all the layers I can right now. We have been having quite a cold snap. Good timing though. Gotta cover up all of those snacks I’ve been putting away. 😉

        • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Yeah I remember around Thanksgiving there is just so much to do, it’s hard to relax and give thanks! I hope you have plans to gather around the table with some loved ones though 🙂 And definitely let the blog drop… it’s not worth stressing over! If I had tried to blog consistently through college I’d probably not pass my classes 😛

  • Carli Ferretti

Love learning more about you! I love animated movies, like Ratatouille and Toy Story, and I love those little minions from Despicable Me!

    xo, carli
    http://www.puppiesandpolkadots.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Carli!! Oh Despicable Me is another great one! The minions are hilarious.

  • Elizabeth Hisle

I’m a coffee snob too! There are just so many good local shops here in town, that I can’t do Starbucks anymore. I buy local beans for at home, grind them myself, and use a French press I found at Goodwill. Um, this sounds pretty darn hipster…whatever. http://lamentinglizzie.blogspot.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahah yes, we grind our own beans as well, it’s the only way to get them fresh! And a French press is an excellent option. Don’t worry– you’re among friends here 😉

  • Whitney V

This is so cute!! I love the series and getting to know more about you! In my case, I’m a complete and total dark chocolate additc (not sneakers or milky ways) but the darker the better and I love them with a cup of Earl Grey tea! 😉

    Love,
    Whitney

    http://www.whitneyswonderland.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Whitney!! And I adore dark chocolate too, with Earl Grey! Hah we have that in common 🙂

  • Wild Hearts + Green Tea

I used to love the lattes/cappuccinos/macchiatos but have kind of “retired” to the good ol’ white coffee! I’ve seen Ratatouille a few times and always fall a little bit more for Paris and the food 🙂 Awesome post, Daisy!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahah that’s great. And exactly– I love all the Paris scenes and seeing delicious food on screen 🙂

  • Jasmin

Thanks for sharing these! The homemade macaron looks amazing. I’m not a big fan of movies, but I do like a good animation from time to time…particularly Tim Burton’s numbers. I like it a little dark and freaky 😉

    Jasmin xx

    http://www.whatdefinesus.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ooh, I want to look into Tim Burton– he’s been coming up in conversation for me lately!

  • Shannon Jenkins

I’m a coffee snob too haha! I seriously could drink 8 cups a day if I wouldn’t go into a caffeine coma haha! Ugh I still need to try that pasta!

    <3 Shannon
    Upbeatsoles.blogspot.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Wow that’s a lot of coffee Shannon! That said, I don’t usually feel the effects of caffeine either 😉

  • Ashley Collins

I just wrote about coffee today on my blog. I am all about fair trade coffee and I would definitely consider myself a coffee snob. However I like to switch it up and call it a coffee connoisseur!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahaha yes, we’re just connoisseurs 😉 And I will definitely check out your post Ashley!

  • Stephanie Beresford

What a great little series! Absolutely love it. xo

    http://www.chasing-peonies.blogspot.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Thanks so much Stephanie! xoxo

  • tara langdale

I totally get being a coffee snob! I am a bit of a starbucks junkie, but if I can find a local spot, I go there for sure, or make a fresh latte at home. vanilla almond milk lattes are my fave!
    xoxo,

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ooh vanilla almond milk lattes sound delicious– I’ll have to give that a try! Thank you for stopping by, Tara!

  • Anastasia Amour

I love this series, it’s such a fun insight into your personality! I used to be a coffee snob too until one day my body started rejecting caffeine, and now I can’t drink it without feeling like I’m shaking! My theory is that surviving on 4-5 cups a day got all my coffee tolerance out of my system and now I can’t go near it 😛

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much, friend! And oof that sounds unfortunate… probably better for you in the end though! Caffeine doesn’t seem to help me stay awake, though (I’ve tried), so I only drink it out of pure enthusiasm 😉

  • Sarah @ 12 Twenty Seven

I love Ratatouille! Buuttttt, I love a lot of animation films! My favorite right now (I’m jumping on the bandwagon) is Frozen but I’m slightly obsessed with Idina Menzel so that as a lot to do with it! 🙂 I love this series, Daisy! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Ooh yes, Frozen was such a good one. And I love Idina’s voice… it’s magical!!

  • Deniz

I am a coffee snob too! Love LOVE Stumptown – have you tried it? In terms of food, I like all sorts of food all the time. Although Shake Shack burgers would be excellent when I’m nervous (:

    – Deniz

    http://www.dressedupdeniz.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha glad to hear it Deniz! And yes, I liked Stumptown, but it’s become so ubiquitous! We see it at Whole Foods now and it’s kind of strange! But actually, my husband and I have a few favorite third wave cafes in NYC– including Cafe Grumpy and Joe! So delicious, and I’m so jealous you get to go to NY cafes! There was also one near NYU that I liked– I think it’s called Third Rail!

      • Deniz

Ahhh I haven’t been there yet but I want to go! I heard that it’s small and is always packed! Will report back once I go there (:

  • Shireen

Nooooo, not a coffee snob please! LOL! You probably break out in hives if I tell you that back in Malaysia, we drink 3 in 1 coffee that comes on sachets. 😛 For favourite animation, it would be Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, I just love it! My guilty pleasure about food would be instant noodles, I love that damn thing. It’s so bad but soooo good. LOL!

    Reflection of Sanity

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahahaha you’re hilarious!! I say, to each their own… 😉 And I love How to Train Your Dragon, such a good one! And instant noodles– I’m with you. I smelled someone eating a cup today and got super jealous! I love MSG!! haha

  • Elmira Vatsni

Nice pictures Daisy. As soon as I saw the first picture, I wanted a cup of coffee. I love coffee but I can’t say I am like your husband. I use my Nespresso machine all the time but I like capsules that have other flavour in them like vanilla, caramel as well. Animation no, maybe because I have kids and now I am tired of watching cartoons:) salty and sour food always taste better for me than sweets.
    xo
    Elmira
    http://www.wellputtogetherstylebyelmira.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Elmira! And Nespresso is just fine– they make decent coffee and have such great service! And I like salty/sour food too… it’s the savoriness that I love!

  • Corinne C

I crave salty things all the time. I don’t really experiment much with coffee. I don’t like paying £5 for a cup of coffee either so I never go into coffee shops!

    Corinne x
    http://www.skinnedcartree.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh goodness, 5 pounds?! that is steep. And we don’t go out for coffee so much either; it’s around $5 a cup for a good espresso drink! We’re making our own espresso and it’s much better… now for the espresso machine to eventually pay for itself in the next 10 years…

  • Rachel Keeth

Loving getting to know more about you! I feel the same way as you do about coffee. I’ve had several Starbucks coffees recently, purely for the much needed caffeine. The only time I enjoy their coffee is when it’s iced (which makes the flavor of burnt or stale beans less prominent) with plenty of syrups to cover up the flavor. I don’t like doing that though, because of all the sugar! Typically I try to buy freshly roasted beans, which I smell to make sure are not burnt. I often enjoy an iced latte, but lately I’ve been enjoying Caffè Americano with some of my own twists.

I hate picking favorites, so I’ll just say that I’ve been enjoying Sleeping Beauty (my favorite growing up, she’s an INFP like me) and Megamind. Lately if I have an anxiety attack from my SPD I start craving a warm bowl of soup. It’s just so cozy and relaxing.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

So glad you feel me on the Starbucks… their beans can be truly awful. One time, a “gourmet” Starbucks bag of beans actually broke our coffee grinder; and the number one troubleshooting solution was to “stop buying Starbucks,” haha. And their syrups are so artificial! But to be honest, I just sort of enjoy hating on the giant green mermaid 😉

Oh, I have not seen sleeping beauty in forever! And I can see you being an INFP– I’m an ENFJ (for the most part), bordering on E/I and F/T. Strong J, though! And yes, warm bowls of soup are the best! I love miso soup when I’m stressed… it’s magical!

  • Denise Kokinis

So cute, Daisy! Love hearing about stuff like this! I love coffee as well, although I’m not sure I’m a coffee snob haha. I pretty much drink it black or iced. I’m not so picky. I crave salty food as well when I’m nervous or upset. Pretzels are my favorite go-to. I also love chips and salsa when I’m feeling that way!

    Denise
    http://www.fashionloveletters.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Denise! Pretzels are good! I used to really like chex mix… the ultimate gas station food! And chips and salsa are delicious too 🙂

  • Becky Kung @ Velvet & Vino

I hear ya about the stress, I crave salty and sweet! Loved this post!
    VelvetandVino.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks Becky! I really appreciate you stopping by 🙂

  • Anne @ Love the Here and Now

I’m a tea drinker but I am married to a coffee and beer snob! Lucky you…you crave salty…I crave sweets. Not good for me or my jeans!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahaha thankfully my husband hasn’t moved into beer brewing yet… and yeah, it’s so unfortunate that sugar is so bad for us!!

  • shannon

Between your good taste in coffee and homemade pasta, I want to come eat with you! is that weird? 🙂 I just got into coffee this past year, so I don’t know too much about the different brews, but I’m all for a good cup no matter the time of day!

    Shannon
    Clothes & Quotes

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Not weird at all! If you’re ever in LA, please let me know, we can feast together 😉

  • She Said He Said – Fashion

All of this looks amazing! I am not a coffee drinker but this looks amazing! I have seen that movie and when I was at FIDM I did an entire project similar to Ratatouille. Your pasta is making me hungry! Love getting to know you more and more each week.

    XO Chelsea http://www.shesaidhesaidfashion.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha thanks Chelsea!! And you were at FIDM? That’s so awesome!!

  • Amanda C

Loved reading this and getting to know a little more about you! I love Ratatouille too, and I have an older brother who isn’t much of an animated movie fan, but it’s on his list of favorite movies as well! And I definitely turn to salty things when I’m under stress. I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth (Which I’m grateful for), but I suppose consuming a sigh sodium diet isn’t that great either! Happy Wednesday!
    Xo Amanda | http://sansscrubs.blogspot.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Amanda! And you’re right, high sodium isn’t great… but I’m pretty sure it’s still better than sugar (which unfortunately is a toxin… ahhh!).

  • Erin Elizabeth

I don’t know much about espresso drinking, but it sue does sound good! I, like you, also crave salty snacks when stressed or upset. Sweets are never a go to for me during that time! 🙂
    xo Erin
    http://www.winkandatwirl.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh, espresso is just a little more compressed than coffee, and you can make foam art in lattes and cappuccinos! It’s fun, that’s kind of why I like it. 🙂

  • Kiki

I crave any sort of comfort food when I’m stressed. A good potato soup, or homemade Mac and cheese and poof! I feel great. (:

    http://accordingtokiki123.blogspot.com/

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Mmm yes. That stuff can really help!! 🙂

  • Chelsea

I crave salty when I’m stressed, too! I can tear through a bag of chips!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

      Yes, I know the feeling…

  • Joanna

Daisy, I really love this series! My favorite animated movies are Aladdin and Frozen:) I like good coffee but end up at Starbucks a lot because it’s across the street from where I work. And I crave hot chocolate and anything sweet when I’m stressed.

    lovejoanna.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Joanna! And yes, I like those two movies as well! Starbucks is undeniably convenient… and hot chocolate is yummy!

  • Jaelan @ Making Mrs. M

    How fun!

That is a great movie. Some of my favorite animations are: Lady and the Tramp, Fox and Hound, and Beauty and the Beast.

My husband and I are also pretty snobby when it comes to coffee.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Those are great animations too, Jaelan. And glad you understand the coffee snobbery 😉

  • Nicole- ClassToCloset

I love this series! I feel like my boyfriend and I are totally coffee snobs too!!

    ClassToCloset

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha glad to know we’re similar in that way Nicole!! 😉

  • Miriam

Toy story is my all time favourite movie! Also, when I am stressed I reach for all the foods that I should stray away from -_- Typical! haha. I’m loving your posts 🙂

    DiscoverMe

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

I was amazed with Toy Story that each sequel was better than the one before! And thank you Miriam!

  • Ya Alexander

My share today is that I am getting anxious about a house we want to buy, is under contract, and we are just going through the “waiting period” and that, is making me anxious!!!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Wow! That does sound a bit nerve-wracking. I hope everything works out well for you!

  • Llinos @ The Lilac Linnet

My share is that I’ve never been able to whistle. I tend not to crave food when I’m anxious, but hot chocolate!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh really! I took me years to learn how (but I mean, it’s not really a useful skill). And hot chocolate is pretty delicious.

  • Currently Wearing

Ohh, I am also a coffee snob! Welcome to the family:-)))

    have a great Wednesday,Daisy!
