Into the Desert: Sahara Dunes and Surrounding Scenes

February 29, 201624 Comments

_AIR8466

Our journey through Morocco continued from Fes to the Sahara desert-- nearly 4 million square miles in size and the largest hot desert in the world. In other words, there is a lot of sand. It's pretty amazing to me how, when there is a large quantity of one thing, it takes on the characteristics of something entirely different. Sand is simply rock that has been broken down over centuries by the elements into a near-powdery substance. It covers the desert like waves of water. It blows like dust. It also slips, crunches and sinks like snow. ...Continue Reading

5 Mindset Changes That Limit Unnecessary Shopping

February 24, 201626 Comments

_DSF5418

I have come a long way in this area. I used to be able to enter the first letter of my favorite brands into my search bar, and their full URLs would pop up. That's how often I "window-shopped" online. Of course, said window-shopping quickly became real shopping. There are many reasons to limit unnecessary shopping, but they might not be the ones that immediately come to mind. Avoiding unnecessary purchases can certainly save money, but saving money isn't everyone's highest priority. Perhaps there are things you desire more deeply than a stash of cash: courage, generosity, community, ...Continue Reading

How to sell your gently-worn clothes

How To Sell Your Gently-Worn Clothing

March 13, 201540 Comments

One major incentive for me to thoroughly clean out my closet was the prospect of selling my gently-worn items. These are the things that I purchased but, for one reason or another, rarely ever used. They're perfect candidates for re-sale, and the extra cash was a great opportunity to choose better ...Continue Reading

5 Misconceptions About Minimalism

What Minimalism Isn’t: 5 Misconceptions

March 11, 201536 Comments

I've been talking a lot about minimalism lately, and I realize it can be a pretty intimidating term. While a minimalist might pride herself on how she's un-fancy and un-busy, the commitment can feel like a judgment on how others live. Somehow, that concept of "living with less" can really ...Continue Reading

On Borrowing Hope

On Borrowing Hope

March 9, 201541 Comments

I met up with some new friends this weekend, and somehow the topic of "borrowing hope" came up. It's nothing complicated-- simply the idea that when one is low on hope, hope can be borrowed from one's friends and community. Others who experience more hope can share that hope with those who are ...Continue Reading

Capsule Wardrobe Tips #minimalism

Capsule Wardrobe Tips (and $200 to get you started!)

March 6, 201533 Comments

Some people find the idea of a capsule wardrobe intimidating. A limited number of clothing pieces for a set amount of time? How do we even begin to choose which lucky pieces those will be? I wrote a few weeks ago about wearing 40 pieces in 90 days (click here to see all what I selected) and I am ...Continue Reading

What Are We Saving For?

March 5, 201517 Comments

We often think of saving time and saving money as virtues to be proud of. Especially if we grow up in a culture or community that prizes frugality, it's easy to think that saving resources is an end in itself. But, while we all might have different approaches to our finances and our time, I think ...Continue Reading

5 Benefits of Unstructured Free Time

March 2, 201550 Comments

We like to live life "to the max". And in this to-the-max lifestyle, our tendency is to fill all empty spaces with something-- anything. We like to fill silences with words, music or television. We like to fill empty buffet plates with mounds of food. We fill our closets with clothing, our ...Continue Reading

2 NYT Op-Eds that Inspire Simplicity

February 27, 20157 Comments

I'm a regular reader of the New York Times (and can I just say-- tough reads lately), but I don't often get to the op-eds. I should though, because there were two pieces in the past couple of years that have really inspired me. When we think about pursuing simplicity, we often are unsure of where ...Continue Reading

5 Goals For A Capsule Wardrobe

February 25, 201536 Comments

Last week, I introduced my Spring capsule wardrobe and talked a bit about why I'm doing it. The main principle behind this simple wardrobe project is this: Clothes should be made for the body, not the body for clothes. Pretty straight-forward, right? I'm coming from the perspective that our ...Continue Reading

Why Our Careers Don’t Define Us (and what really does)

Me: Hi, I'm Daisy. New Friend: Hi! I'm John. Nice to meet you. Me: Nice to meet you as well! John: So, what do you do? Me: I'm a private educator. What about you?   Sound familiar? One of the very first things we tend to ask people when we meet them is, what do you do? And ...Continue Reading

7 Reasons We Buy Things We Don’t Need (and how to avoid them)

February 20, 201559 Comments

Here's something I've done frequently. I go to the grocery store for one item, and I come back with five. Or, I go to the mall to replace something that has ripped or fallen apart, and I come back with a few new pieces of clothing. Or maybe I'm ordering something online, and free shipping makes ...Continue Reading

Wardrobe Simplicity: 40 Pieces in 90 Days

February 18, 201564 Comments

We should absolutely love all of our clothes. But so often, we don't. We should be pleased when we look at our wardrobes. But sometimes all we want is something new. Our clothing should make us feel fantastic. And yet, it frequently doesn't. It's time for a new approach to building a ...Continue Reading

Learning to Love Silence

February 17, 201536 Comments

We don't live in a culture that loves silence. There is very little time between the time that silence commences and our powerful need to fill it. When with friends, we feel awkward when silence falls between us. When alone, we seek to stimulate our minds whenever we're awake. Nothingness is ...Continue Reading

Brussels Sprouts Slaw with Cabbage, Carrots and Peanut Sauce

February 12, 201526 Comments

I'll be honest. I'm crazy about this salad. And it really wasn't that long ago that I finally realized salads do not have to be limited to Spring Mix lettuces, spinach or even kale. Collard greens make amazing salads (like this one). And so do brussels sprouts. What was it about brussels sprouts ...Continue Reading

5 Areas of Our Lives that Need Simplicity

February 11, 201534 Comments

If you're like me, then you're on a journey to simplify. You'd like to spend less time having to make useless decisions, organizing unnecessary items, and carrying out unimportant obligations. Despite having a strong sense of what I care about and don't care about, I still spend a good part of my ...Continue Reading

February 10, 201543 Comments

I don't live in a concrete jungle, but I don't live in a lush forest either. So I can become so accustomed to seeing very little green and very little nature from day to day. And I can forget how much joy it brings me to go outside-- not just down the street to the public library, but into a space ...Continue Reading
