This SoCal’d Winter

December 9, 2014

Last week, it rained for two days. The cool temperatures, gray skies and sweet aroma of rain-soaked grass and pavement were an absolute delight. But now we’re back to the relentless SoCal sun, and can only wish it were winter like it is throughout the rest of this country.

SoCal Winter 3

I’m learning to dress seasonally for a place with no seasons. And I’ve realized that it is more about the colors, fabric and vibe than about how many layers you’ve got on. With highs in the 70s and even the 80s, we hardly need to own coats!

SoCal Winter 2

Wearing (all purchased in previous years): faux fur vest & maroon blouse (Ann Taylor) / kitten heels (Tory Burch) / shorts (Bar III)

SoCal Winter 4

SoCal Winter 1

Don’t you love faux fur? It’s unbelievably warm and just gives off that luxe, cozy winter vibe. Bold, dark colors are perfect for this season– wine, maroon, teal, navy, evergreen. And swapping out sandals for pumps can always help ring in the season.

Thankfully, I’ll be spending the week of Christmas holed up with family in the Colorado mountains. There will be iceskating, cross-country skiing, a fireplace, and SNOW!

SoCal Winter 6

What are your tips for dressing seasonally? Would you be glad to wear summer clothes all year round if you could? I’d love to know!

I feel like I would never get sick of 70s or 80s even in December! But I think it’s so fun to dress for the seasons too. You rocked this outfit, Daisy! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahah I promise that too much sunshine truly *is a thing*! It’s raining now in NorCal (where I currently am) and it’s just so fantastic!

  • Erin Elizabeth

I would never think to pair all this together, but it looks perfect!! 🙂 Love it!

I’m VERY impressed you pulled off the fur vest in SoCal. You look very cute – it’s the perfect length to pair with shorts! I’m glad you can join us in the fur trend 🙂

Also LOVE that top – that bow is so freakin’ cute.

Aw thanks girl!! To be honest I can wear fur in the early morning or evenings… during the day it’s still too warm!

  • ashortblonde

I would have a hard time living someplace with out seasons! Moving from the midwest to the south I was concerned but it still gets “cold” (just not the bitter, endless below freezing temps) so my fears weren’t necessary. I would miss wearing all of my sweaters.

    ashortblonde.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

I do miss wearing all my sweaters– I actually miss all my fall clothes, which are still in a box! I may have to sell/give away quite a big portion if I really don’t ever need them 🙁

  • Kerrie Mitchell Burke

Daisy, you look so beautiful and glamorous. You know, I never would have thought about pairing this look with faux fur but it totally works and is so refreshing. Absolutely love it!

P.S. It has been raining non-stop here in Boston so I’ve been committing blogger blasphemy and wearing leggings and a ratty old sweater the past two days.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thank you so so much Kerrie! And you’re in Boston?! I miss Boston so much– I lived there for 4 years. Sorry to hear about the rain; I think your daily outfit sounds absolutely wonderful in that kind of weather 😉

I’d be thrilled to wear summer clothes all year round! I’m so jealous you’re wearing shorts right now ;] However, I do feel a little lost since there hasn’t been any snow (except for an early snowfall in November). Usually in MI by now we’ve had some!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Wow really! It’s about time for snow up there 😉 And you should move down to SoCal, it really is summer all the time pretty much!

  • Samantha@Elah Tree

O’goodness, SoCal in winter and I have yet to adjust. I miss the cold weather and all the layers. Even though it rarely cools in our area I still relish in layers and I love the evenings, the one time of day we can pretend it’s cold.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Right! I do love the evenings here. Taking a walk through downtown is so much fun 🙂

  • Sarah @ 12 Twenty Seven

Certainly there are aspects of summer that I appreciate but I am such a winter girl at heart. I love layering and the dark, earthy tones! This outfit is so stinkin’ cute, though! I love that you mixed the winter colors with the comfort of summer wear! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Yes!! There are so many good things about winter that I miss! And thank you so much Sarah 🙂

  • Rachel G

I love that rich purple on you. And a world with no winter is my ideal world. It’s suddenly gotten quite chilly here over the last week!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you Rachel! And yes, winter can cause all kinds of inconveniences… but I love that cozy feeling of sipping something hot and reading a book, which just feels unnatural here!

  • Kiki

I love this Daisy! I cant imagine having it 80 in December. But that’s my Ohio blood. I love how you styled this to accommodate your warmer weather. Precious! (:

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thanks girl! And no, 80 in december is TOO HOT! I want it to drop to the 50s and 60s at least 😉

  • Alaska Renee

Oh, California. Today I woke up and wore a cardigan and right now it’s so warm! I want real winter. Absolutely love the fur!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

So glad you can relate!! Where do you live?

I live in Riverside, but spend most of my time in Orange County!

You do a fabulous job of dressing seasonally. I love the change of seasons and changing up my wardrobe so I think I would be a little bummed to dress for summer year round, but of course I could get used to it!

  • Amanda Elizabeth

That totally looks like something I could be sporting in FL right now!

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Haha yes! Glad you can relate 🙂

  • Rachel Keeth

I can’t imagine not being able to wear sweaters. As it is I can only wear them a few times a year, but I wish it was year-round! You do it beautifully, though. For me it can be hard to find an autumn wardrobe, because I need more summer colors, however I was able to do so pretty well and at a good price at Goodwill and Target this year. I’m mainly sticking to the same tops I wore this summer, maybe a few sweaters here and there, with a nice cardigan or peacoat.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

I love wearing sweaters too! It’s way too hot for them this time of year, mostly. And goodwill can be absolutely amazing– I love buying second hand items 🙂

  • shannon

Oh the relentless sun, I know all about that, but we’ve had gloomy skies for the past week now and I’m enjoying every bit of it 🙂 I would never think to pair my fur vests with shorts, but I actually love the combo! Thanks for the inspo, Daisy!

  • Llinos @ The Lilac Linnet

This outfit is CUTE! I love the bow top. I would like to wear summer clothes all year round, tshirt or dress weather would be good. But then I might miss my scarves and boots! Hmm tough one.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much!! Hahah exactly– the same weather all year is a bit boring!

  • STYLE DELIGHTS

Lucky you to have good weather in the middle of winter!:-) We have 30 degrees and RAIN here in NY! Uggh!!! Love this fur vest! Hope you are having a wonderful day!

    xo ClassToCloset

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thanks Nicole! Stay warm out there!!

  • Elle

Ah, I’d love to wear summer clothes all year round! I was going to take a walk today. . .but it’s just a bit below freezing so I talked myself out of it haha.

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Oh yes– that’s pretty much how I talked myself out of exercising in the fall and winter (and parts of spring) when I lived in the Northeast! I swear, the sunshine does get boring out here– a bit of variation would be inspiring 😉

  • JLynn Justad

I love this outfit! and I must say, I’m quite jelous of your Colorado Christmas plans! Sounds like a blast! xx

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Thank you so much, friend! I am so incredibly excited for Colorado 🙂

  • Shireen

I am super duper envious that you have sun and are able to wear shorts! LOL! It’s not snowing here but we’re getting hit by a storm so it’s been raining non stop. It doesn’t bother me as much but it’s driving hubby nuts. LOL!

    Reflection of Sanity| Smashbox Giveaway

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahah I do love rain actually. 🙂 And I only have about 5 pairs of shorts, so I’ve been wearing similar outfits every week 😉

  • Joanna

You look beautiful, Daisy! I love your faux fur vest. I’ve been wearing mine all the time lately. Spending the holidays in the Colorado mountains sounds amazing and so relaxing!!

In Maine, this has already been a really bad winter weatherwise! The temperature yesterday reached a high of 12 degrees, and there’s been snow and/or freezing rain constantly. So I’ve been bundling up and avoiding being out for too long. Your California sun is definitely making me jealous!

    lovejoanna.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Aw thanks girl! Faux fur vests are perfect for this season 🙂 Oh, and that sounds very cold. I hated freezing rain or “wintry mix” when I was in New England… no fun to walk or drive in! And you should come out to visit, Joanna! 🙂

  • Nabihah

I bet a lot of people in freezing cold countries will envy you for your lack of snow in Cali! I love the faux fur vest, it dresses up any outfit. I always go for more neutral colours in the colder months, ivories, wines, blacks and navies. I prefer fall and winter fashion so I have no complaints about not wearing my summer clothes then!

    thesundaywardrobe.blogspot.com

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Hahha yes it is a bit of a trouble-in-paradise complaint, but I swear it gets so boring here! And thank you Nabihah! I enjoy fall/winter clothing as well…

  • Ashley White

    Enjoy that California sun! 🙂

    • Daisy @ Simplicity Relished

Really! I swear it does get boring 😉
